WOW!WOW! WOW! What a week out in Portland and the coast, don’t even know how to exactly describe it. All the shows were just alot of fun, made some new fans and friends -a big shout out to Steve and Jan- they ponied up for 3 of the 5 shows, and we had a blast. Thanx to all the staff , Stepahni, Ray John and Kathy at Kernville Staekhouse in Lincoln City, Sam and staff at Boon’s Treasury in Salem, Becca, Eva, and all the staff at Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, Chuck, Teresa and everyone at Hotel Oregon in McMinville (this place alaways amazes me) - along with Sam and Julia at Edgefield in Troutdale- Ya’ll ROCK!
Got to also hit the studio during those shows, in the day time and record (Partially)… 5 new tracks, as we get ready to get the list together for….thats right…a new CD! Thanx to my buddy Brian Hunt for all the help. The plans for timing and release are a ways of, but ya gotta have goals. For alot of new folks that we are getting as fans- the following piece was written about me in 2006- it was in “Idaho Magazine” and my buddy Ryan Peck did the interview. Enjoy, as you get to know more about me. Oh ya, P.S. The is some GREAAAAAT News coming out….soon. Hang on to your hats kids.
The Musical Journey of Idaho’s Jimmy Bivens
The first time Jimmy Bivens played on a stage he had a three-member
audience that couldn’t even see him. “My friends and I went to visit my
dad at a club. He told me I could get up on stage and play a song if I
wanted,” recalls Bivens. It was daytime and the stage was closed off
behind a heavy, velvet curtain. “I climbed up there and kicked out a
version of an old Conway Twitty song with my buddies. I didn’t think
that anyone could hear us, but when we got done I heard a little bit of
applause. I peeked out from behind the curtain and saw my dad, the
clubowner, and Tammy Wynette.”
It wasn’t strange for Jimmy’s dad ,Wayland Bivens, to be hanging out
with someone like Tammy Wynette. Wayland was a country swing hall of
fame musician who had big connections in the music industry. “A friend
said to me once, ‘can you imagine what your life would be like if you
would have grown up around your dad?’,” Bivens recalls with a smile.
Instead of growing up with his dad however, Jimmy was raised by his
mother and stepfather. That is until he was 15. “I was born in Lewiston
on October 24, 1959,” says Bivens. “Since then I have lived in 17 states
and somewhere around 75 residences.” But it wasn’t the moving around
that bothered Jimmy, it was the way his family treated him. “Things
weren’t so good at home. I realized that I was better off on my own than
staying with my mom,” says Bivens. So at age 15, when most kids were
just starting to think about getting their drivers license, Jimmy left
home, albeit with the complete blessing of the court system. After
striking out on his own, Jimmy first picked up a guitar. “You know, my
family used to tell me I was tone deaf?” says Bivens. “I may have not
even tried playing music had I stayed where I was.”
After living on his own for a bit, Jimmy decided it was time to get out
of Nampa. He decided to head south to Long Beach, California to catch up
with his dad. Jimmy bounced around Long Beach for a few months and then
followed his dad up to Sacramento. It was in Sacramento that Jimmy
graduated from high school–he decided to go sans college. “I had
already been out and lived on my own–I felt like I had already done the
college thing,” laughs Bivens. Instead he took a job cutting parts at a
Harley Davidson shop and formed a band. “We really just played around
doing covers and stuff,” says Jimmy. After playing a few bands, Jimmy
got a little put off by the “egos” he played with. He decided to put his
guitar away and quit playing. He wouldn’t pick it up again till nearly
eight years later when he was 26.
Over the next few years Biven’s floated around working different jobs.
Eventually he took a job with the American Cancer Society–eventually
becoming an executive director. He was offered other promotions in his
tenure, but Biven’s says they were “non-fuzzy” jobs and Jimmy wanted to
keep working with cancer patients. And it was this working with cancer
victims that prompted Bivens to pick his guitar up again. When a camp
for children with cancer needed some entertainment, Jimmy ” threw
together a show with one of the camp counselors.” The impromptu show was
a blast. Soon Jimmy found himself playing gigs all over the place for
the American Cancer Society. “I think I hold the distinction of having
played the more benefits and auctions than any other musician,” says
Bivens with a laugh. Eventually Jimmy left the American Cancer Society.
But a few years later cancer would re-enter his life and prompt him to
take his music further.
Ten years ago, Jimmy Bivens visited his good friend in the hospital. His
friend’s body was ravaged with cancer, and the hospital visit would be
the last time Jimmy would see him. Seeing his friend in such a
devastated state had a profound effect on Bivens–but he didn’t feel any
of that effect until later. When he went to the hospital all he could
think about were the river sandals next to the hospital bed. “I looked
down at his Tevas and thought, ‘I wonder what size those sandals are?’”
Jimmy says with a distant look in his eyes. “It was my way of escaping
the moment.” Days later Jimmy’s friend died. Bivens escaped to the
desert. “I just drove around for three days in the desert,” says Bivens.
“When I would think of a song I’d sit on the back of my truck and work
it out.” After spending some time reflecting and writing–Jimmy had
worked out nearly a whole album’s worth of material–the song about his
friend’s sandals became a tune called “Dead Man’s Shoes”.
At the time, Biven’s didn’t know if the songs he wrote on that sojurn
would ever see the light of day. He just kept doing what he was doing:
playing gigs around Idaho. Then, in 2002, Jimmy found himself sharing
the stage with country great Clay Walker in Las Vegas. It was backstage
where Bivens ran into Walker’s bandmates Rex Wiseman and Curt Walsh.
After a brief conversation, Jimmy let Wiseman and Walsh hear some of the
stuff he had been writing. After listening, Wiseman said to Bivens, “You
gotta be one of the best writers I have ever heard.” Jimmy laid down the
plans to record an album with Wiseman and Walsh..
To make his first album, Jimmy did it proper–he rented out a studio in
Nashville. Bivens was new to the studio, and new to the whole process of
recording. Because of this, he unknowingly kept the feel in the studio
“light”, Bivens thinks this easygoing environment helped his album. At
the end of one of the recording days, Curt Walsh came up to Bivens, gave
him a hug, and told him it was the most fun day he had ever had in the
studio.
Since releasing his new album, Tell the Story, in April of 2005, Bivens
has become a full time musician. His album provides a great foundation
for his new full time job. “I made the album with a looping effect …
the songs are all different and when you get to song ten and the disc
starts over, you don’t realize it,” says Bivens. “It’s a musical
journey.” He plays gigs all over the Northwest. He does his shows as a
solo act. He likes the freedom it gives him. Bivens also sees himself
more as an entertainer than a musician. “I have broken 7 out of 10
fingers–I am not a good picker. I love entertaining people … whether
they are 3 or 93. You gotta smile when you play,” says Bivens without a
hint of sarcasm. If you ever see Bivens play, you’ll learn a lesson in
entertainment. Bivens frequently sets a washboard up on stage and
invites kids to play with him. He caters his songs to his audience,
constantly tweaking his presentations to as to keep the most people
smiling and having a good time.
And what does the future hold? Currently Bivens is working on a small
town, rural tour. He wants to take his music to the small, out of the
way towns where, as Bivens sees it, traditional music began. “I can
teach communities how to write grants for the arts,” says Jimmy. “And do
a traveling show showing people where and how music began. ”

Caught your show tonight at Grand Lodge and enjoyed it immensely. Loved
the the wide range of music you played and the passion you have for
music. Reminded me of my college days and being a part of a band. Will
definitely make an effort to see some of your upcoming shows. In the

Happy New Year, to all!
Yes, it’s upon us…2008. We look foward to this year- it does not come without challenges. Michelle will be having a major surgery that will put her down for a few months- so please keep her in your thoughts. I am going to be playing more in the Boise…and Idaho area during this period, although I will be traveling out a little. The Americana on Tour has been on a bit of a respite- although we are turning up the heat and begin again next week- bringing in some new pickers and players. Kayleigh Jack will now be the opening act- then Kevin Sam, Traci Underwood and myself. Very xcited about the possibilities of where we may be playing during 2008.
My solo act continues to evolve- as to where I am hiring some great side pickers that are keepin it “Live and a Surprise” for those that follow, cuz you never know who’s going to be out playing.
Thanx to all those that have supported my music- I am as driven as I have been… here we go.
jimmy b

Ok, we’ll move along. On the Americana On Tour update- we have seen a little attrition and have moved Kayleigh Jack into the opening spot, still followed by Mr. Kevin Sam, Traci Underwood and then myself. Looks like there is interest in the show in some great parts of the countrry, possibly early spring???? We shall keep you alerted. This truly is the greatest opportunity to come my way-greatful, very greatful.
On the solo/ and friends sidde of things, still been out touring Washington, Oregon and Idaho and stil jamming with some great pickers and singers. Thanx to all that support…we never know who we are going to see when we go out……this has lead to some great bookings, downtown Boise in January at Hannah’s. Wednesday June 27th
Where has the time gone? Well it hasn’t been bad- let me tell you this, about that. Life is a funny creature, so much going on that is just incredible. So where have I been since we last chatted? Crutsy’s in McCall- reopened after the fire -great to see Vern, Jen and all the fans that came out- headed back up this weekend. Went over to Whidby Island out of Seattle- had great shows at EdgeCliff with all my brother’s- Ro, Dave, Salta, Hit, Larry and the cast of “Cabaret”. The Doghouse brought us a wild night, then traveled off to do a private party in Chehalis Washhington,I can tel, you that these 3 nights, aged me about 3 years- but it was worth it all!.
Went to West Sac and did a concert on the river- happened to be about 5 minutes from where I performed my first song on stage- when I was 16. Got to see some old friends- as I graduated from high school there. It was a great time- thanx to West Sacramento Parks and Recreation- Scott Stanley and all that put it on, see you next year.
I came home and did on show at Lake Harbor and brought my friend Brady Goss the 17 year old piano phenom- he impressed everyone- remember his name cuz he is gonna be somebody.
I’m at the Sockeye in Boise this Friday night- alot of the cast of Tour Americana will be coming out to sit in- then we open in Idaho City on Saturday night for world reknowned Blues Guitarist- Fiona Boyles- 5:45 at The Idaho City Music on The Rocks. Go to www.gruntwerks.com for more info.
The Americana act is getting legs under it- great cast of players, great music- we lost Jonah Shue due to his busy schedule and pickerd up- Kayleigh Jack- a young, very talented Fiddle Player. Hope to see you all out- Peace to you and yours,
jb
Saturday- June 2nd.
So last night was my second anniversary of quitting the day job, and as a “Reward”- I was given the opportunity to perform at the kick-off the Lake Harbor Series with the line up getting ready to Tour these United States. All I can say is- my life changed again. And in a incredible way. We rehearsed my stuff Wed. night- for about 2 hours. We had a few rough spots- but we wowed the crowd and ourselves. The line up of musicians- was great. The energy- was over the top- Tracy Underwood has joined forces with us- if you haven’t heard those pipes- we’ll see you out next time. John Kline on the guitar- what a great soul- he smiles, plays da shit outta da geetar- Kon Knox on the skins- nice job brother. What can I say about my friend Jonah Shue? He was a little under the weather- but he still pulled off some great licks on the mandolin and fiddle (he makes me complete). Richard Soliz joined us on the bass- Kevin Sam worked his magic on the stage. Last but not least- Gayle Chapman- has worked so hard helping to pull all of this together. She made the charts for all the REAL musicians that read music.(well I guess I have a new goal- it’s like trying to learn…….greek or something for folks like me.) She also performed and set the table for this tale of Americana music.
Thanx to Jim Teeter of Gruntwerk Productions along with Don Tunnell for this wonderful ooportunity-dreams really do come true- I know I have stated it sooo many times- it’s just true- if you believe.
I am a humbled person for all of it- peace to all of you,
jb

Hola my friends!
We did it- 3 week tour and made it home in one piece! Landed in Seattle on Tuesday- then ran off 5 shows in 5 nights! Tired, but Oh Baby was it worth it. The Mcmenamin’s shows went as follows- Grand Lodge- very nice, exploded with energy at the last- Amanda and her group came thru at the last and the place went crazy baby, crazy. Off to Edgefield, Michelle flew over for the last 3 nights- we got to see Therese’, Brian and made some new friends, also. The night was filled with enrgy, Julia at the bar was a great lady- having never worked with her before (Oh ya- Hi Angie, Becca, Brandy and Katie at Grand Lodge!)
Ok- are you ready….. Saturday night at Hotel Oregon- was completely f@#$%in crazy! I can only describe the absolute “Love Fest”/riot/craziest night I can remember. The ladies from Portland (not gonna remember all the names-) Sandy, Casey, Jennifer…..all of you rocked the washboard and tambourine, sang, screamed, whooped yelled and gave me memories that will last a life time. These pictures, from the Europe Tour and the rest- will be up on my website- (going to be coming out with an entirely new look for the website…..soon. It was nuts. It was great to see our friends Guss and my big Sis- Marilyn. You 2 are too much fun. Thanx to Evan at the bar and Chuck…. for just being Chuck. Also a …thanx for my new friend buying the Patron that night-I ended up swearing like a trucker and had…maybe one too many (guess I needed it).
Off to our friends in Kernville- below Lincoln City, Oregon, John and Kathy. I got to do a kind of quiet, introspective show- just what the Dr. ordered aftet the stretch I had. Met Paul and Bonnie- Jenny came out with some friends- Larry and his bride were out- thank you all for your support- still livin a dream..
See you…..out.

Great guys that own the bar- they lived in Boise for a while- also met a lady in the crowd- that I my sisters and I went to school withe her and her siblings, in Nampa Idaho- in 6th grade! I met a lot of great people last night. Salt sold -like 8 or 9 Cd’s for me- looks like we found a job for him. I was gettin pretty rummy towards the end ofthe night- a little jet lag thang, I guess.
Whn I get back to my office next week- I’ll update my calendar- alot of cool things are going on- so check it out about mid week- we’ll be expanding into the Seattle/Northwest Washington corner- probably in May/June.
So I won’t really have any intermnet access probably til Tuesday -so one last shout out. Some guys that worked behind the scenes to assist me along this journey- Salta, we learn everyday my friend. Hit- your humor makes you a bright spot- in anybodys day. Hove-what can I say my friend- our time together and your kindness- will never, never, be forgotten.

And now- the end is near…………Sunday March 18th.
Well, the last 2 shows were a little different- they were not really set up for music- so I ended up being a bit of a background intrumentalist. It all worked out and it’s been quite a variety of shows. I am so grateful for the opprortunity that I have been given. Thanx to Charlotte Tenot, thanx to Herve Duxin, my buddys, Hit and Salt for getting me on the plane- my buddy Hove who has accompanied me thru the trip- Andy from the Loving Cup band who flew over to join in and hang out, Karen Ballard for introducing me 5 years ago to Herve(and she has been such a great resource because of her International knowledge- I am so thankful for you my dear). All of my sponsors whom without you- I would not have been able to make it here. Keith and Debbie, Mark, Scot and Katie, Al, Doug, Amber, Forrest, Noreen, and Keven and Lisa. A special thanx to my wife Michelle- who in my mind stays with me and reminds me that any time I think I have it tough in life- I think of her and all that she deals with (mainly putting up with me!)- I love her for all that she is and does.
I come back home on Tuesday and hit the ground running- I come back healthy, stronger and hopefully wiser.
I love you all, never let your dream(s) die.

Friday March 16th
How do you say- BOY HOWDY????????? Last night comes in 4 parts- here we go. Played Cafe Montmartre again- this time downstairs- stage and lights. Was told there were 30 students coming in for dinner- rock em on downstairs and get a party going. They…… were students, noone realized that they were from a school in Belgium and all in about the 6th grade. I was backstage, we talked about it- the owners were disappointed for me- I shook it off and told them that we would rock whoever was there. When I came out of the back- there were 4 of the kids scrambling off the stage - I brought them back- plugged my guitar in, gave them the washboard and tambourine and the party was on. For about the next half an hour- we switched the kids out and got them all shakin and bakin- I mean crazy like. They were whoopin and hollerin, dancin and sceaming. The teachers were videoing, taking pictures and when done- I set a new personal record for signing autographs in one setting. Ask me about the pictures of the kids that were in the crowd and on stage- it’s something unexplainable.
OK- so part 2 found me downstairs alone- playing for about 45 minutes while some friends were upstairs enjoying dinner. Althought hey were trying to get to come up and do the strolling mintsrel thing again- I stuck to my guns and hung there. Then they starting filtering down- I played for about an hour- all my own stuff. The crowd was very appreciative and enjoyed.
Part 3- I walked up and 3 minutes later a crowd came in that had come thru earlier looking for my show- said they would come back- so when I saw them, I turned back around, went back down- tuned up and rocked them for @ an hour- hard. Had a gentleman I came to find out later on the washboard, and he was incredible- that ended up being a Symphony Composer/cello player/director- he had never played one before- but he can’t say that anymore. I was handed at the end of the show- a sketch/portrait that another gentleman named-Bernard who also played the washboard- drew a likeness of me while I was playing. I thanked him and (now- part 4) he invited me upstairs to sit down and do a charcoal portrait of me- right there in the restaruant. Come to find- he is a very well known artist in Montmartre. Bernard talked to me while he and his friends sat there. Another gentleman spoke of his work and is evidently talking to his counterparts today. They are talking about following me for the next 6 months or so- to do a documentary on my life. I am very humbled by only the suggestion of it. They were very moved- all of them artists in their own right- by my passion in what and how I perform. Berenard finished the portrait and I had signed a CD and gave it to him. He then wrote the following on the side and autographed it.
Quote ” To Jimmy Bivens
Your portrait, is my portrait. It is my eyes on you and my ears about your great and moving singing. Bernard (I can’t make out his last name)”
He then wrote his email, address, phone number and invited me to to play at his home for friends- when I return. Hove and I were about to leave and Bernard syaed- “Jimmy- who is your favorite American actress?” I said that i didn’t really have one- I am kind of old school and thought Sophia Loren is the epitomy of a sensual actress. He agreed- told me he had met her- flipped over the 2 foot by 2 foot paper tablecloth and sketched her portrait- RIGHT THERE nad handed it to me.
Wow.
Tonight a friend from the British Band- Loving Cup has flown over to join me for the next 2 nights at Joe Allen Bar- a gentleman form NYC owns it and - who knows what will occur this time…… check in- I’ll keep you all updated.
I’m floating…………..

Thursday March 15th
Bonjour Kiddies!
Played at Cafe Montmartre last night- did the travleling troubador thang- Just walked around and did quiet instrumentals for the corner couples- sang and played louder for the bar and some friends- went out on the street in front and sang- real loud. The owners are great and I go back tonight and play downstairs on the stage- finally, sound/lights, etc. Should be fun.
here’s a wild one- I started my first song- heard a crash by the front door- saw a lady getting up from tripping over the chalkboard anounncing my show- lady gets up and for those of you that know her-IT WAS AMBER! The little shit had booked Paris with a friend back in december and our date overlapped- by one night, last night! My jaw dropped and I went into the “OK-JUST WHERE THE HELL AM I?) mode. Pretty cool- I recouped and grabbed the reins and played on.
Hope everyone is well- I’ll get back to you soon,
Au revoir,
jimmy b
Hey Kiddies,

January Update
If you read about Gramma Doris who I met last year up in Wallowa Lake last year, she passed away last night- January 30th. I got a chance to go out to the assisted living home she was staying in-a couple of weeks ago. I fulfilled a wish of mine- by playing for the her and other residents. I sang ” I Dreamed of a Home”, an old standard- for her.
I know she’ll keep an eye out for me- (tap,tap,tap- keep that rhythm jimmy!)
Update for Europe
Have added a show on the 13th in Paris and a new SPONSOR! Gig’s Music on Orchard-. 375-6001. Go see Andy for all your musical needs and questions. (see below)
WE DID IT!
Headed -”ACROSS THE POND” We are booked for 3 shows in Paris France- March 14th/15th and 16th. We are scrambling for dates prior to these shows in other countries- in order to spread the love as much as we can. These are a “SHOWCASE”- invited are Festival Promoters and Organizers. This hopefully will in turn land us some shows later in the season. Very exciting. I have alot to do- including raising some sponsors and do some fundraising as I am still a P.W.B. (poor white boy). We have landed our first Sponor- DONNELLY SPORTS, out of Twin Falls- will be putting together our merchandise. Hat’s T-shirts etc.- very cool, they will be available soon, keep an eye out for them.
If you can help or know someone that would like to support this ” Can’t Miss” opportunity- we are looking for Frequent Flyer Miles and any kind of monetary sponsorship we can drum up.
This is a chance to turn the corner on this dream- thanx for everyone that has been in our corner- it only gets better!
Peace,
jimmy b
01/08-07 Off to A Great New Years
Just got back from Enterprise Oregon- playing at Lears. A new found friend “Dub” sat in on guitar ( a great guitar player- and great guy) and my buddy Al Bell was there on harmonica-we played to an empty house for ahwile- til the basketball game got out and the Terminal Gravity open mic night was done. And then- we tore the house down. Dub, Al and I had never played a gig with together, but that didn’t stop us from figuring it out- quickly. This was alot of fun- we are going to do some more shows together- as I return up to beautiful Wallaowa County- Memorial Day Weekend. We hopefully will be able to add a 4th person to this ensemble- a 17 year old piano phenom- Brady Goss. Let me go on record to tell all of you that are reading this- this kid is going to be a STAR! He has all the abilties- to do whatever he desires. I’m going to try to help get him to the right people- he is also a genuinely nice person- which goes miles- in my book.
I’ve booked my first gig in Baker City Oregon at Barley Browns on Thursday the 18th of this month. I stopped and met Tyler the owner- cool cat, this should turn into another great stop along the way.
I hope you can make it out to see what I have added to my show- I have been re-born.
Peace Kiddo’s,
jimmy b
p.s.- Congrats to Steve and his B-ball team- I got to catch their game on Saturday night, they won a on a last second 3 pointer- nice- very nice.
12/29/06 n 06 Shout Out.
Hello kids- how’s thangs? I haven’t had a computer for awhile- which has made things tough- but you can always gain perspective by looking arond you and seeing who has it tougher in life- a guy w/out a computer- or the homeless gal on the corner when it’s damn cold out. Anyhoo- this has been a really great year for us. I have learned- once again in the music industry, that nothing is for sure- the only guarantee is that it’s all up to me- ain’t nobody else gonna push-unless I do. The support from you that make it out- is soooooooooooooo appreciated. I find that it’s easier to make a living doing this- outside the state, same old story, for whatever reason. I have one suggestion for other performers in the Treasure Valley- QUIT PLAYING FOR $50.00 A NIGHT- YOU’RE KILLING THE MUSIC SCENE FOR THOSE THAT ARE SERIOUS ABOUT MAKING A LIVING!
I’ve written some new material- if you make it out- you’ll get to hear some new rockers, the guitar parts are much different than some of my earlier stuff- people seem to be enjoying. I have also just recently added something new to my act- that has changed the whole show- come on out and catch it.
Some of the people that have entered my life over the last year- are making the tougher times that come along with the biz-worth it. Keven and Lisa @ the Hartland Inn, John and Kathy at Kernvilles, all the McMenamins folks, Lisa Lepine,Glenna at Seven Devils in Riggins, Graham Huebner, Dawn Wells and The Spudfest Film Festival, Ryan Peck with the NPR Show- Music From Stanley, Ruth Bronson, Al and Jennifer Bell, Rodd Ambroson, Dub, Mary Carper, Steve and Kathy from Lears, Zack and Jason at the Sockeye, Vern from Crusty’s, Merrian, Neva and all the folks in Halfway Oregon at Wild Bill’s Saloon, my dear friend Forrest Hymas at Smiley Creek Lodge, all the fans in Eastern Oregon, all the fans in Western Oregon and on the Coast, Boise Fans, Twin Falls fans and all the fans in Valley County. You all inspire me to play with passion- forever trying to reinvent myself- for you. The elbow surgery was a great thing to have done- although we are just coming out of it. It’s allowing me to play, write and create- more.
A special note to Ron Gardner- thank you my friend- thank you.
I hope- if you are reading this- realize that it’s never too late in life to live a dream- it doesn’t come w/out hard times, some that is still to come- before it all gets betta. W/ the support from friends and family- I’m not sure what the feeling would be, yet it beats the hell out of doing things in life, much less fulfilling. I am blessed with abilities that I haven’t yet tapped into, keep checking in- you just never know…..
Peace to all of you- hope the New Year Rock’s for all ya,
November 30th 2006
There’s been alot going on- Jesus and Johnny Cash is out on www.myspace/jimmybivens -You can download a copy there- if you like. Pass it along, let the fever begin!
I’m going thru alot of changes right now- I will only be able to be reached on ibjimmyb@msn.com email account- or call me at 208-859-3558.
I hope to be able to write about all the cool venues and shows that I’ve had lately- I’ll get caught up soon.
Hope you enjoy the Holidays. Life can be challenging- just always trying a way to find perspective.
Peace and Love,
jimmy b
ps-keep an eye on my calendar- I’ll be in Idaho, most of December.
I will be opening for Lauren Sheehan in Feb. at McMenamin’s Grand Lodge.
Check the calendar- just got re-booked thru April w/ McMenamin’s!
AND I want to thank- “Lisa Lepine The promotion Queen”- this chick rocks!
The Oregon Tour
What a blast that was. I was out on the road for almost 2 weeks- nice to be home. I started off solo- Michelle got to fly out and catch the last dates. Played up at Crusty’s- first, always a joy and the crowd looks to be building- every time. I went over and stayed at the Hartland Inn in New Meadows, Keven and Lisa let me hang out for a few days- which gave me the chance to finish a couple of songs and start a couple of new ones. Went over to Enterprise and had a really fun show at Lear’s- Al Bell came in and sat in on alot of tunes- that boy can blow the harmonica. Rodd Ambroson (you need to google his name and see the incredible bronze work that he does) came in and did 3-4 of his numbers- great writer and a great person. Thanx to Steve and Kathy for having me up -see you in January. Onto Portland and the McMenamin’s run. We had a great crowd at the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove- it’s interesting how each place has a local crowd looking for the new acts coming thru- they fed the energy-all night long. Over to Hotel Oregon- great to see Guss and Marilyn out, Katie was rockin behind the bar and the washboard! On Saturday- we traveled over to Edgfield- what a great place for a quick vacaton. Peter, Jenna and Brian- thanx for coming out. This was a show in the winery- kind of a tough hall- we’ll situate the show a bit different as we return to do these 3 shows in about 3 weeks.
Last Summer- I played 2 shows- 2 nights, 2 different palces, 2 different people came up to me and stated that my show would be perfect for a restaraunt/bar in Kernville- just south of Lincoln City on the Oregon coast. Long story short- we hooked up and I played there the last night of Oregon run. John and Kathy own Kernville Steak and Seafood house and are great people- have a great spot on the Siletz River, really fun staff- and a base of customers that are music lovers and officianados. (sp?) Played 4 sets- everything just seemed to be magic- going back over in Janaury and March- can’t wait.
Well it’s time to finish a few more songs- the faucet has turned on and doesn’t want to seem to turn off. I have finished several new ones and can’t wait to share them w/ you. Jesus and Johnny Cash is finished and I will update you later this week as to how and when it will be out!
Peace,
jb
October/September
OK-OK- it’s been awhile, again- so lets get caught up.
I’ll start from last week and back up. I did 4 shows in 3 days over the Oct. 12th the 14th weekend. The Cove in Twin- was once again-fun and rockin, this crowd gets bigger and better- especially as it gets colder and darker out earlier. Back to the Sockeye on Friday night- first time back indoors- met some new folks, my buddy Jason Parmenteri came in and did dome of his tunes- he’s going to be doing a solo show before long, so keep your eye and ear out for him. He’s a very promising writer. The family reunion on Sat. night- was fun and great to re- connect with Wendy, Doug, Debbie and everyone else- thanx for having me.
I went to Sacramento- the weekend before. Played for about 400 folks on Friday night at a Picnic- got to hook up w/ my old pal- Phil G. -did some old tunes together, it was an early gig- just had alot of fun.
Saturday brought me to the Roddyfest- remembereing an old friend who passwed away a couple of years ago-complications from diabetes- damn that disease. I opened up the whole thing and though not well attended- it looks like we are going back next year and “If you build it………” Thanx to Jack, Jeff - good seeing Phil Giebel and everyone that helped out. Later I went over to the High School and did an hour and a half set for the “Relay For Life” event. I got to see alot of folks that hadn’t seen in @ 10 years- nice homecoming. Hello Barbara Shreve- you looked great and it was nice to see Brad- also. I finished off the week being the “Featured Performer” at the open mic night@ the Fox and Goose in Sac.
Life brings on the challenges- music make it better.
See you all- soon.
jimmy b
ps- Jesus and Johnny Cash-should be out- within the next couple of weeks!
What have I missed? I have missed writing on the my journal. I think I’ll try to put alot inot this session. I had an absolutley WOW show up at Crusty’s- in fact- 2 of them. One was indooors- the other - out. Had everyone banging on something at the end of the indoor show-I mean everything. The outdoor show was a little slow to start- then it filled up outside- and just built and built. Vern- you are the man- thank you for having me up- I love that spot.
I did a show at the Idaho State Fair- a 3 hour show. It was in the Midway tent/ stage. Gayle Chapman did the booking and opened for me. We had Matt Bauscher on the washboard, had a half dozen young girls/ sisters doin a dance contest- It just worked.
I finished a demo of my song “Jesus and Johnny Cash”- last week beore we headed for Oregon for Labor Day. This song- I am trying to shop/sell. If it doesn’t get any response- I’m going to “finish” it in the studio and release it as a single. It is getting incredible response- everywhere we go.
So we headed for Oregon over the weekend- played a small house on Friday- Steve had my nights mixed up on his calendar. A kid named Brady Goss (17 year old) came in and sat in on about 5-6 songs. He is a Honky-Tonker, i.e. Jerry Lee Lewis. This was fun- keep your eye out for this kid- he is hot. Re- booked for October 20th.
I gotta back up a few days- some friends of ours bought an old bed and breakfast in Halfway, Oregon. We stopped off and spent a night on Thursday, stopped off and dropped a business card to Wild Bill’s- a restaraunt and bar in town. The Rodeo and County Fair was going on and they had booked a band for the weekend- in the front end. We let them hear Jesus and Johnny- and left. After my show at Wallowa Lake Lodge on Saturday- which was a small crowd- very intimate (3 couples from Boise were in the crowd) we got a message the Fair Board in Half way (they were in need of musicians to perform at the Fair, I left a message w/ my info) and a message from Mary Ann- the owner of Wild Bill’s. Bottom line- we got up on Sunday- drove back to Halfway- I played in the Beer Garden at Wild Bill’s on Sunday night- absolutley toer that place down! All the boy’s from the Rodoe came in- i did 3 hours- they went nuts- especvially whe I did Jesus and Johnny Cash- WOW! Thanx to Neva, Jennifer, Dave, Bud, Mary Ann, Betty, Tony and Tom and everyone that came out. Got up on Monday and performed at the Fair/ Rodeo for about an hour and a half. Looks like we ‘ll go back this Fall to Wild Bill’s- looking forward to it.
Well, back home- don’t have alot of shows this month- that’s all good- got some work to do around the house before the weather changes.
Thanks for all the support- get ready for the new song- it kicks.

First Annual Tunesmith Roundtable Dinner
Saturday August 5th- Enterprise, Oregon- Lears Dinner House
This was the brainchild of Al and a few others that live and love music. As I described in my calendar- prior to the show this was a great opportunity to join with other singer/songwriters, Janice Carper (replaced Al Bell- who was on a fire at this time),
Auburn Isaak and Rod Ambroson. We took turns- doing one of our tunes at a time- talking about why, how and what potentially influenced to each of us to create each piece. I let the audience know that it was very possible that I would talk more than the other artists- given that I had traveled the furthest and had much more time to think about the craft.(the other’s were local) I have to say- that for such a small community- there are a ton of great writers and performers in this area. Just in Al’s family- they all seem to have some talent that they are willing to share w/ the rest of the world. Using that last line as a segue- I want talk About Jennifer’s (Al’s wife) mother- Doris. I believe Doris is in her late 80’s and her body might be giving out on her a bit- but her mind and memory- is sharp. She doesn’t get out as much as she would like to- so I took some time and performed a couple of my songs for her- in the kitchen, before I left for the show. We had conversed earlier about how different our pasts were- her’s she stated- was a great childhood and life, while my childhood- well- I still am dealing w/ alot of it- even today.
I sang her my song- “King of Swing’- for she loves that style- while telling her about my Dad’s musical background and how I dedicated my CD- to him.
She loved it and kept time- (perfect time)- tapping her hand on the table- which if you’ve seen some of my show’s- given I am a solo artist- timing isn’t something that I always am completely concerned about. Anyway, this brought back a distinct memory of my Grandmother- once doing the same thing! I didn’t spend much time around her in life- so this got my attention and I was staying in time! She also is about the same age as my grandmother- the last time I saw here, before she passed away. I next sang her a song I call-”Right On Time” - a song about my Dad’s drinking and demise. I didn’t realize what the emotional ride- that would begin for me. When it was my turn- to do my first song I told the crowd what a great opportunity this was for me -to be able to sing some of the songs, that I don’t normally do when I am out being more of an “Entertainer”, vs. an artist. These songs mean alot to me and if people aren’t really “listening to the words”- I’ll always opt for others. I sang, “Dead Man’s Shoes”, “Sara Sit’s On Sundays”, a new called- “Borrowed Memories”, and my most recent (going in the studio within the week to record) “Jesus and Johnny Cash”. The first 3 songs- allowed people to know alot about me- as a person and a writer. I didn’t realize how much I had “Given of myself” -til I woke up the next morning. When you come out and hear “Borrowed Memories”, you might get a glimpse of why I got emotional. I got out of bed and had trouble visiting w/ Doris- only because- all the “Missed Memories” of never growing up around any family, (besides the one’s that made my life miserable, except my sisters) came creeping in. Michelle and I hung out for awhile- thanked Jennifer - kissed Doris goodbye and headed home. Michelle gave me a little time- knowing I would work thru it.
Thank you Al, Jennifer, Doris, Steve and Kathy from Lear’s, all those in attendance- and all of you that take the time to read these- knowing , it just helps.
Love you all.
Wallowa Lake Lodge- Wallowa Lake, Oregon Friday August 4th
My buddy Al Bell- who plays harmonica for Jimmy Lloyd Rhea and the Switchmasters (and who also is launching a solo career-you go boy!) turned me onto this area and this gig. The lodge is very old and historic, great front room. I kicked off at 8:30- there was a group of @ 60 that were down doing the friends/family camping thing. Some of them tried to escape the crowd and came across the street- found out I was playing- grabbed more people and the party was on. One of the kids- was Caleb- he stated he played some guitar- we got him on the washboard- a Performer was born! Oh my he did a solo- walked thru the crowd (keeping in time) and came back with a couple of dollar bills in his mouth!
Sounds like Ruth is going to book me again over the Labor Day weekend- keep an eye on my calendar, really look forward to getting back to this beautiful place in life.
Spudfest Film Festival Driggs, Idaho
I missed the window for getting into this last year- and this year- I ended up being the featured artist, for 2 nights. This is put on by Dawn Wells (Mary Ann from Gilligans Island). Dawn has put together a film institute which within the next year- will be a 2 year program If you have ever had an interest in acting, producing, cinematography, etc.- this is your oppourtunity. Anyhoo- I got to do 2 shows prior to the 2 nights at the Drive-In- different, but very cool. Thanx to Dawnelle at the Drive- in, thanx also to Rick, Grant, Teresa, Michelle, all the staff from IFTI, all the students from IFTI (you guys rock)- all the writers, producers, screenwriters, etc.- that came out to support me. I enjoyed seeing the films that were shown at the Festival. Michelle and I got to hang out with some great folks- and also - the 3 big winners. David Coleman, produced a documentary called “Blindsided”. This is a story- about a young kid that finds out at a young age- that he is going to lose his eye sight. There is no “Hollywood” cover/gloss in this film it is something that can impact your life. Thanx David. www.blindsidedthemovie.com
B.J. Scwartz, won best short- a story w/ a twist- called “Wolves in the Woods”. You will enjoy this film and if you ever get a chance to meet- B.J.- you will be entertained- a very, very funny man. www.wolvesinthewoods.com
John Duarte- won best cinematography- for “Dairy Cow” . He grew up on a dairy farm- this is a cool look at this world- also just a great guy. www.duartefilm.com
I also got a chance to do a couple of “Live” radio spots- in Driggs and Jackson Hole. This was a blast- Neil in Driggs and Jake in Jackson.
Thank you Dawn and everyone that made this happen.
Smiley Creek- July 15th
I called a great friend that owns Smiley Creek earlier this year- and let him know that he REALLY needed me for his Annual Fly-In. Not sure how many planes actually came in- although the crowd that was there- was a blast. Had a few folks jump up on the washboard- which really kicked things into gear (after a monetary bribe!) I got to do some original stuff- along w/ some covers. we are booked for next year- these folks know how to have some fun. Thank you Forrest, my friend.
Roseberry
Last year, after my CD came out- I got on my old Harley and rode the Hwy 55 corridor- stoppin and droppin my CD off. One of the places- was Roseberry- 1 mile east of Donnelly. Kenny Blake was working on a road crew and passed off the CD to Kathy Eld. She and her husband, Frank- are doing an incredible job of bringing this corner of history- back to life. Be sure to take the time to drop by and visit w/ them. Anyway, as I dropped by later in the day- I walked in and commented about how much I liked the music that she had playing in her antique store- it was my CD. They have a Wed. night show each week- I got them to book me for last Wed- a place and a show that I will not soon forget. As I expalined to this wonderful crowd- it’s a rare opportunity for me to be able to play a majority of “My” music- along w/ a few covers. I played 2 hours- straight thru (although to Bob’s dismay!) and truly put on a concert. As I build my show as I go- this one took on a life of it’s own- from the beginning.
Thax to all in attendance- you enriched my life. To Frank, Kathy and Bob- truly great spirits.
Thanx
Well kids- it’s been awhile. If you haven’t heard the news- I have been selected for the top 10 finalists at the 1st annual- “Idaho City Music On The Rocks”- singer/songwriter competition. I get 2 songs (going to be unveiling a brand new song at the show)- somewhere between 2 and 6 pm. If you don’t have any plans for that date- PLEASE COME CHEER ME ON! I am sure that crowd participation will help.
I just returned from Oregon- had some great shows- may have landed a few over in Lincoln City. Played Mile HIgh Marina in McCall for the 4th- that was very cool. Thanx to Deja and Sean- you guys rock! I also landed the headliner act for the 3rd Annual “Spudfest Film Festival” in Driggs Idaho. I’ll do 2 shows- Friday and Saturday- prior to the festival starting- cool, very, very cool. June was great month- so many great shows coming up- check the calendar- come on out- it’s always great to see ya.

Eagle Fun Days
OK- so who’da thunk you could rock a pancake breakfast crowd- starting at 7am? I thougth I had done it all- til now. That was alot of of fun- sold CD’s-gained some new fans. There have been alot of really cool compliments as of late- this one I have to share:
At the pancake breakfast a stately gentleman walked up to me in between songs. He was @ 80 years old and a classical musician. Stated they were having a conversation about my voice and what a wonderful range I have. He told them that if Elvis would have had my voice and talent- Elvis would have gone farther.
It is all very humbing.
Playing at the MIle High Marina- McCAll- july 4th- 4-6 pm. Nice, very nice.

7 Devils Saloon Riggins, Idaho
OK- So I bugged Glenna(the owner for more than a few months- letting her kow all the way along- how I would be a great match for her place. Oh we were right- I know a say how different gigs get better and better- this was the coup de gras(sp?).
Anyway- Friday kicked in kinda late- thanx to Andy and Katie Nachman form Northwest Voyaguers for bringing the troops down- you rock on the washboard brother.

Boon’s Treasury Salem, Oregon
I’m really not sure where all this is going to lead to at this point- but I am hangin on for the ride. Michelle went with me for my first gigs for McMenamin’s- in Oregon. On Thursday night- we were in Salem at Boon’s Treasury. Cool bar- was filled up for the first set- started at 8. For a week night- the crowd was diverse- families, solo’s, small groups. The table with all the young ones- came up and sat in on washboard- one at a time. The youngest- actually was almost smaller than the washboard- hopefully the pics come out well. We kept after it for the next 2 sets- had a great time.
Hotel Oregon Cellar Bar
Saturday night in McMinville at the Hotel Oregon Cellar Bar- was a whole different feeling. Started at 7-just a few folks Elizabeth at the bar- Marily and Guss (butthead as he is affectionately known)- then it started to pick up. We had folks celebrating Mother’s Day and the place started filling up- given that it holds@ 40 people (maybe) -it got wild. Chuck the Mgr. and Elizabeth asked me to play til 11- vs 10, which worked out nice- cuz everyone was just- gettin down. This was one of the best solo shows I have been able to put together, thus my earlier comment- not sure where all this will take us- just enjoying the ride,
Shout out to my buddy Bria n Hunt for putting up w/ us.
Thanx to Lisa Lepine for landing the shows- you rock!
Peace folks,

Piper Pub Saturday May 6th
First of all- thanx to everyone that came out- you made this a blast. Some of you know that I spoiled myself last week- by buying the Bose Sond system. WOW WOW WOW- That is is the single greatest thing I coud have done for my show- at this point. It grabs everything. I have wanted to play at the Pub- for awhile. It finally worked out as far as getting a date- and we friggin rocked the house. Had nothing but compliments on the new sound and everyone just had a riot. Thanx to Scotty for re-hiring me for Wednesday June 21st- I’ll kick off at 7- as Alive after 5 ends- should be a busy night. I’ll be back there on the weekend- Saturday June 24th.
For those that really know me- I am so happy. I am not pinching myself- or looking over my shoulder. I am dwelling in the present and what lies ahead. I have landed every gig(almost) that I have been after over the last year. Lesson is folks- dreams come true- they are the blueprint to your reality- if you won’t take no for an answer(and try ot to live everything that “Might Be” -in your head.)
I love ya’ll.
New Review from The UK!
Thought I would share a bit from a review that came out this week -from the UK!May 05, 2006 - 04:54 PM -
Jimmy Bivens and Friends “Tell The Story” (Independent 2006)
(Overall review)
Good, but must try harder with his next release.
Boise, Idaho resident Bivens has released his first album despite being a musician for over 30 years. So what’s taken him so long? Well he’s only recently become full time, but that shouldn’t have stopped him from releasing music before surely? Other people manage it.
And based on this album he definitely should have got in front of the recording desk before now. Simply for ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ which has schmaltz country ballad hit written all over it. Bivens shares lead vocals with Amy Rohans, who doesn’t make a particularly good job of it on the first three tracks (‘In order to be free’, ‘Blessed are the children’ and ‘Street Traffic’). Well she does, but the tunes are either not particularly memorable or just irritatingly happy, particularly ‘Street Traffic’.
But when Bivens sings the intro to ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ the album starts to go up a gear and we’re on a roll. Followed by ‘It’s a Good Day’, Amy shares her “I’m alone or am I?” question. A brief sojurn into swing with ‘King of Swing’ is a minor diversion, before Bivens again picks up the reins with ‘I Got Love’, a rockabilly feel track that chugs along effortlessly like its been blessed with an early Johnny Cash vibe.
And so the album goes. One good track followed by a mediocre one. ‘Sara Sits on Sundays’ = good. ‘2C or not to see’ = not good. Bivens apparently has three more albums worth of material and will release a variety of different music as he doesn’t want to pigeonholed. Perhaps he also needs to be little more picky about the quality of some of the tracks he’ll be choosing for future albums.

Thanx to Richard March for giving me the spot- along w/ Mike from Swell Productions. I have to say how much I was looking forward to this show. Unforunatley- I got slammed with some kind of head cold/ allergies- something. Anyway- I got thru it- although I can only remember thru all the years- only feeling worse, at one other show. Oh well- we got thru it and turned some folks onto what we got going on. Hope to be back- soon.

WOW! This show was on a whole different level. First off, a shout to and thanx to Kyle. He came in- about the 3rd song into the show- introduced himself, said he plays the mandolin. He pulled it out of the car and played that thing- all night long- we were on fire. Ed sat in on guitar w/ Kyle later in the night- hope they have a good time playing the 26th at Crusty’s. I am booked there- thru August- so if you are in the area, come on in for great pie, beer, and the staff rocks !

OK- Ifound out that these guys were having a gathering- called and told them how much that they needed me to open for the Classic Rock Band- “Six Cents”. Thanx toStephanie from High Desert and the boys from the band- for giving me the window. Evidently, they liked me enough- so that we will be working on a deal that will have me playing at the 2 shops they have- the other is Birds of Prey in Caldwell, on Tuesdays and Thursdays , starting in May. Keep your eye on my calendar- the promo nights should be a blast.

Thanx to John, Debbie and all the staff- see ya next month!
March 11- The Plank- Boise, Idaho
This was my second gig at The Plank- what a show! Had only a few regulars- although the crowd that was there- was da’ shit. This was one of those shows that we just kinda kept feeding off of each other. Two of the guys from one of the other bands(can’t remember the name) jumped up on my break and kept the crowd into it. Thanx to Chris and Joe- they’ve re-booked me for April 8 and 29th- come on down for a great time.
Peace,

Concordia Coffee House Portland, Oregon
Friday Feb. 3rd
This was a 20 minute set- my first out since the elbow surgery. I played- “Open Air”- no PA, no amps. This is really a favorite of mine. I sat the first couple of songs, then got the itch and got up to belt- “Tell The Story”. It was very eclectic, as far as the other performers. Had a great time- Portland has an amazing amount of great and talented performers- look forward to getting back there. Thanx to- and great to see my buddy Brain Hunt drawisgood.com
Teton Ridge Ranch Jan. 13(yes- Friday the 13th)
I had been requested by my friend Herve’ Duxin, from France- to come over and play for a French Press Tour- while they were in Idaho. Thanx to Karen Ballard for helping to put it all together. After a few days of figuring out where this would work best-we met up in this beautiful facility, near Tetonia, Idaho. After having been in the lodging industry for 5 years, I can tell you that there are very few places that know how to put on a show like these folks. Comfortable-INCREDIBLE STAFF, view, food- top notch-all the way. I traveled over, shot some pool, had a wonderful meal, played some guitar while Herve’, Stephane and Claude all joined in on some percussion pieces. I am sure that none of them have ever played a washboard before. Stephan writes for a few Horse magazines in France- interveiwed me for them- I’ll have to have them translated. There is still hope that I will be able to travel over to play in Festival. Great to see my friends- thanx to Jan and Jan at Teton Ridge for putting me up. Thanx to my friends from France-always a pleasure.
Sockeye Brewery and Grill- Jan. 10th
OK-if you are reading this- I am going in for the elbow surgery tomorrow- January 17th. I wanted to take time to thank everyone for their support over the last 6 months. This last show at Sockeye- was a friggin kick. Thanx to Dr. Mambo for sitting in- we rocked the house. I really hate going down at a time like this- everything has just been rolling. I realize that in the long run- it’s best to get ‘er done. I hope to finish the songs that I am projecting that will be on the next CD. Not much else to say- please stay in contact- all laying around and no playing makes jimmy a ……….
Peace Out Kids,

The Trolley House Jan. 6th and 7th
A shout out to Ron and Bill for coming in and sitting in with me- what a blast and a real blast for all of those in attendance. Thanx to everyone that came out- both nights. Seeing so many friendle faces in the crowd- it’s kind of indescribable.(is that actually a word?)
